Air Duct Cleaning FAQ — Goleta, CA

Common questions from homeowners in Goleta and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often do ducts in a Goleta house actually need cleaning?

Most homes here land somewhere around every five to seven years, and plenty go longer without any real problem. What shortens that window is construction dust, a recent remodel, pets, or a stretch of sundowner-driven wildfire smoke that pulled ash into the attic and the return. Salt air and marine humidity also matter, since damp supply boots in an unconditioned attic hold dust that dry duct never would. If nobody has opened the system since the AC retrofit went in, it's worth a look regardless of the calendar.

Walk me through the job from the time you show up.

We start by opening the air handler or furnace cabinet and looking at the blower, coil, and whatever return path the house has, which in older Goleta ranch homes is usually one central grille and nothing else. Then we cut or use existing access into the main trunk, hook a negative-air machine to it, and pull the whole system under vacuum. Each supply register gets agitated with a rotary brush or compressed-air whip so debris travels toward the vacuum rather than into the room. We close access panels, reseal them, run the system, and walk you through what came out.

How much of my day does this take?

A single-story tract ranch with eight or ten supplies and one return is usually a two to three hour visit. Larger 1980s–2000s infill homes with two zones, or a house where flex runs snake all over a vented attic, can push toward four or five. Add time if the attic access is a closet hatch over a shelf, which is common in this housing stock. We give you the realistic window when we see the system, not a number guessed over the phone.

Why would my neighbor's bill and mine come out different?

The biggest driver is how many supply runs and returns the system has, because each one is handled separately. After that it is duct type and condition: original sheet metal trunk-and-branch in the attic cleans differently than torn or sagging flex added during a later AC retrofit, and badly deteriorated flex sometimes needs replacement instead of cleaning. Access counts too, since a low attic with blown insulation over the runs takes longer than a crawlable one. We look at the system, tell you what we found, and give you the number in writing before anyone touches a tool.

Are you going to move my furniture around or leave dust everywhere?

We shift what sits directly over or in front of a register and put it back. Anything heavy, fragile, or mounted we leave alone and work around. The system stays under negative pressure the entire time, so debris goes into the vacuum rather than into your living room, and we lay protection at the equipment and at the access cut. Registers come off, get cleaned, and go back on the same screws.

How can I tell if the problem is the dryer vent and not the HVAC?

Look at where the symptom shows up. Clothes taking two cycles, a hot laundry room, or lint around the exterior hood is a dryer vent issue and has nothing to do with your heating and cooling. Weak airflow at bedroom registers, dust reappearing on surfaces days after cleaning, or a musty smell when the blower kicks on points at the HVAC side. They are separate duct systems, and we can inspect both on the same visit.

What happens if you find mold in there?

We stop and show you. Marine layer mornings May through August keep humidity up, and cold supply air moving through a vented attic produces condensation at boots and at the coil, so growth here is usually at those specific spots rather than throughout the duct. Light surface growth on metal we clean and treat with an EPA-registered antimicrobial. If it is in porous flex liner or spread across insulation, that section gets replaced, and if the scope looks like a bigger moisture problem we tell you to bring in a remediation contractor instead of selling you a cleaning that will not fix it.

Does a fresh filter go in before you leave?

Yes, as part of the visit when we have the right size on the truck. We stock standard sizes for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, and American Standard equipment. Older Goleta homes often have an odd filter grille or a slot the previous owner modified, and in those cases we measure and tell you exactly what to order. Putting a clean filter back behind dirty duct does nothing, which is why we do it at the end rather than the start.

Could someone get out here before the end of the day?

Often yes. Call in the morning and there is a good chance we have a slot open that afternoon, especially midweek. Smoke events and the first heat after a long marine layer stretch fill the schedule fast, so those days we may be looking at tomorrow. Tell us what you are dealing with on the phone and we will give you a straight answer on timing.

Where do you travel for work?

Goleta is our base and the bulk of our work. We cover the south coast of Santa Barbara County along the narrow coastal shelf between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific, including the neighborhoods around UCSB, Old Town, and the newer infill tracts and condo complexes. Because the climate is Mediterranean with rain concentrated November–March and functionally no freeze, we run a full schedule year round. If you are not sure you fall inside the line, give us the cross streets and we will say yes or no.
